Oxidative stress in the inflamed wound environment causes premature fibroblast aging, which can lead to the breakdown and insufficient production of the extracellular matrix. The presence of non-senescent fibroblasts can help defend against pathogens in the wound while helping to promote matrix regeneration through the release of signaling factors.These fibroblasts produce molecules including Type I and Type III collagen, fibronectin, and tenascin, which in combination provide structural tissue support while protecting the wound and directly influencing the behavior of nearby cells to promote regeneration.
